Characteristics of Slovak education
Education in Slovakia can be obtained in a private, state or church school and at a grammar school. The Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic approves the list of compulsory subjects.
The choice of the child’s place of study is made by the parents. Studying in the country opens up prospects for further free education in Europe.
The length of the school year in schools in the country differs from the normal one in Ukraine, as it lasts from September to June (inclusive). The holidays are about the same as in Ukraine.
The educational process is designed in such a way that during the entire study from primary school to secondary school, the burden on the student gradually increases, as a result of which the applicant has the necessary professional knowledge when entering university.
The final stage of secondary education is the completion of the school-leaving examinations and obtaining the school-leaving certificate necessary for admission to university.
The term grammar school was initially used in Slovakia to refer to Latin church schools. At present, grammar schools are one of the standard elements of Slovak secondary education.
Admission to a grammar school is possible on the basis of passing entrance exams or a sufficiently high average on the primary school certificate.
The most popular in Slovakia are grammar schools, where the curriculum is created with an emphasis on professional subjects necessary for subsequent higher education. There are many people who want to study at such grammar schools, so only the fittest can take the entrance tests.
Education at a grammar school lasts 4 years (after finishing primary school), during which students are purposefully prepared to pass the school-leaving exams and enter the university.
Admission to a university without a certificate of completion of a full secondary education is impossible.
For foreign applicants who do not have a Slovak document confirming completed secondary education, it is necessary to nostrify the certificate, i.e. go through the process of recognizing the certificate as equivalent to the Slovak one.
The curriculum of secondary vocational schools is designed for 2-3 years, during which students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge in their chosen field.
At the end of their studies, students take exams and receive a certificate of “secondary vocational education”, but admission to a higher education institution with such a document is not possible.
To continue their studies at a university, the applicant must complete a 2- or 4-year study at a secondary vocational school or grammar school and pass a final exam.
Schools offer specialized education that is sufficient for college admission.
Education in secondary vocational schools also lasts 4 years.
After passing the final exams, graduates receive a certificate of completion of secondary vocational education.

Costs
Cost of Secondary Education in Slovakia
Regular secondary schools are free for everyone. Private study costs around €300 per year (depending on the type of school).
If the school is located far from home, we recommend checking the availability of the dormitory. This is a fairly common practice.
